Another class party - this time it was for Sophomore Clinical Medical students who met at 8 on Friday mornings. Instead of spliting the group into 4 and meet at our apartment, I got smart. I asked the monitor, Antonio, to find a room for us to have a party. Yes, he found one for us. It was in room 8106 of the Main Medical Building. Even though it was just a classroom with nailed down desks and chairs, we had a good time. I fixed everyone the traditional "Sloppy Joe" and students brought some snack food to share.
For the program, we were going to do karaoke, but the computer didn't work right, so we just had a plain old party with songs. Jay Thelin was our guest musician. He played his harmonica and everyone loved it. Then each group performed by singing songs, mostly in Chinese. Yes, they love to sing and to perform. There was no slowing down...they kept going. It was fun for all.
As you can see the slideshow, the Chinese students are fun loving. One difference though, boys stay with boys and girls stay with girls. They show love for one another by holding hands, doing things together., nothing more. This is a cohort group and will stay together for 5 years to finish their clinical medical degree. They all live in the dorms, 8 per room. I visited one and it was on the 6th floor, no elevator. It was a humbling experience to see their rooms with 8 bunk beds and not much of anything else. It reminded me of when I went to college in Taiwan, except that was 40+ years ago, and things have changed dramatically in Taiwan the last 20 years.
Here are 2 slide shows.
